  • Mirror Replacement

The mirror on your camera does not affect the image quality, however it does affect the quality that you see through the viewfinder.  If your mirror is old and worn, you can replace it with a new one.

Most of the Camera Techs listed on the resources page can probably replace your mirror, or if you are adventurous you can try ordering a small piece of 1mm thick “First Surface Mirror” from a specialty manufacturer such as Edmund Scientific or firstsurfacemirrors.com and cutting it to size, then Super gluing it into place.  A “First Surface Mirror” is the kind used in telescopes and high quality optical instruments.

The factory thickness of the ACL Mirror is .5mm thick.  Edmund Scientific does not sell it that thin, but a custom glass company may be able to sand it down to .5mm for a charge.

If you take it to a 3rd party, just make sure that the Mirror’s Aluminized Surface is protected and that they understand that unlike a regular mirror, a First Surface Mirror’s coating is not intended to reflect through the glass.  The glass is merely a support and the fragile, unprotected coating is the reflective side.
