  • Removing The Motor

I made this video before sending my ACL in for service.  Please note that I do NOT recommend taking off the motor yourself because it is tricky to get it back on and running smoothly.  [Update] WARNING! Be sure to read Saul’s excellent comments for additional information.  In this video I am not following best procedures for camera repair and it should be repeated that I am not a tech, nor do I have any business taking cameras apart!  Again, the ONLY reason I took the motor off here is because the motor did not work at all and it was already on it’s way to the shop.

    • Jason, that is not the best way go about mounting and dismounting the motor. I am not surprised it sounds loud after remounting. I would send the motor in to the shop before using, showing this video to the tech so that it can be put back in timing order.

The first mistake is not to turning the inching knob until the mirror is in front of the gate. Then, without moving the inching knob or running the motor again, the knob and the plate around it have to be marked each in complete alignment with a drop of fast drying paint, this is important as they both have to align perfectly in the same spot when remounting for the motor’s timing to work as before – if the motor’s timing was off before the motor came off, then servicing is in place.

When the motor comes off, its DRIVE CRANKSHAFT SHOULD NOT BE MOVED, as you did on this video. The timing of this motor was thrown off by moving its crankshaft to a different position relative from the motor.

Finally, when the motor goes back on, not only the green connectors has to align perfectly. Using the drops of paint, one has to align the motor’s inching knob with the crankshaft back to where they originally, so that the timing remains consistent.

If done correctly, the motor should purr quietly just like it did before it came off. If the motor was loud to begin with, serving is necessary.

Should read: The first mistake is not turning the inching knob until the mirror is in front of the gate.

    • Thanks Saul, your advice is invaluable as always. I’m updating the post to further warn viewers that I do not have any expertise with ACL repair. Please note that I am of hillbilly heritage and I like taking things apart without any guarantee that I will ever get them back together. Proceed with caution!
