  • Convert Projector to Super-16

Stock 16mm projectors do not project Super-16 film, however they can be converted much in the same way that cameras are converted.  Below are a few projectors which are relatively easy to convert to Super-16.

    Siemens model 2000 Double System

Very easy to move the condenser and lamp reflector over 1.1mm because of the simple way in which they mount and can be accessed. Lamp position controls easily allow it to be re-centered. Aperture plate must be modified to (1) enlarge the opening to S-16, and (2) to remove the raised support that would scratch Super-16 — easily done by any machine shop, or even with a file. Pressure plate on back of lens needs to be filed wider for Super-16, easy to do. Also, the metal plate that makes up the entire aperture assembly needs its aperture to be widened. 50mm lens does not seem to need to be re-centered.

    JAN Military Projectors

The aperture plate and gate easily slide out, making switchover from Regular-16 to Super-16 very easy (it works just like a dual 8mm projector). Moving the condenser and lamp reflector is a little bit of a job, but do-able. Aperture and Pressure Plate must be enlarged for S-16. The key is that after the aperture is enlarged all the way to Super-16, there is no support at all on the left side of the plate at the frame opening (the left side gets filed away into nothingness). A stainless steel support .7mm wide must be machined and epoxyed to the side in order provide proper pressure, or the film may skip. The sides of the image don’t seem as bright, and adding some diffusion in the lamp housing might not be a bad idea, although this would also probably flatten the contrast.

    Eiki

    Very easy to convert.

    Kodak Pageant

A bit more of a pain since the aperture and pressure plate are one assembly, but it can be done.

    Moviola Upright

    Can be cheaply converted.

    Steenbeck Flatbed

    Can be cheaply converted.

    • Hello, I need to convert several Eiki 16mm projectors to Super 16, can you direct me to a source with instructions for a beginner? Thank you very much!

      • @Cole Unfortunately I don’t however you should try the cinematography.com forums. Possibly Bernie at super16inc.com might be willing to give you some advice – he does those conversions.
